Summit Dental Implants

In addition to routine partial and full dentures, we specialize in state-of-the-art implant dentistry. Dr. Bernstein was a amongst the first Prosthodontists in the United States trained in the revolutionary Branemark implant system from Sweden. He restored his first implant in 1985 when the Swedish implant came to the United States. Implants provide a great way to achieve functional and cosmetic goals when teeth are missing due to accidents or dental disease.

What Is an Implant?

Dental Implant are primarily made of titanium which is very compatible with oral tissues. The implant itself serves as a replacement for missing roots. Once placed in the bone, the titanium implant and your bone begin to integrate together in a process called osseointegration. This provides a strong base for a functional crown or bridge.

Implant Process

The treatment planning phase is very important. We use Cone Beam scans which allows precise surgical and restorative planning on a computer. We are able to measure exactly what size implant is needed for the treatment and can even get an idea about the quality of bone the implant is to be placed in. Complications are minimized due to these scan details.

An incision is made in the gums and the implant is placed in the jaw bone. The gums can be placed back over the implant while implant and bone integrate together which takes about three months. Depending on the amount and quality of bone, we may be able to place a healing abutment, which would prevent you from needing a second surgery to expose the implant.

There is a third alternative today that is becoming very common. If the bone is very strong and passes a strength test then we can go ahead and place the crown immediately on the implant. In this way you will not be without a crown during the healing process.

When a single tooth is being replaced Dr. Bernstein will either cement or screw on a crown to the implant. If there are multiple missing teeth we can place a suitable number of implants to bring function and esthetics back to your mouth. Implants are the most conservative option when the teeth on either side of missing teeth are healthy. This avoids filing down teeth to fabricate a bridge.
